    In the U.S., you can grab coffee with a CEO in two weeks. In Europe, it might take two years to get that meeting. I ’ve spent years building relationships across both U.S. and European markets, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: networking looks completely different depending on where you are. The way people connect, build trust, and create opportunities is shaped by culture-and if you don’t adapt your approach, you’ll hit walls fast. So, if you're an executive expanding globally, a leader hiring across regions, or a professional trying to break into a new market-this post is for you. The U.S.: Fast, Open, and High-Volume Americans love to network. Connections are made quickly, introductions flow freely, and saying "let's grab coffee" isn’t just polite—it’s expected. - Cold outreach is normal—you can message a top executive on LinkedIn, and they just might say yes. - Speed matters. Business moves fast, so meetings, interviews, and hiring decisions happen quickly. But here’s the catch: Just because you had a great chat doesn’t mean you’ve built a deep relationship. Trust takes follow-ups, consistency, and results. I’ve seen European executives struggle with this—mistaking initial enthusiasm for long-term commitment. In the U.S., networking is about momentum—you have to keep showing up, adding value, and staying top of mind. In Europe, networking is a long game. If you don’t have an introduction, it’s much harder to get in the door. - Warm introductions matter. Cold outreach? Much tougher. Senior leaders prefer to meet through trusted referrals—someone who can vouch for you. - Fewer, deeper relationships. Once trust is built, it’s strong and lasting—but it takes time to get there. - Decisions take longer. Whether it’s hiring, partnerships, or leadership moves, things don’t happen overnight—expect a longer courtship period. I’ve seen U.S. executives enter the European market and get frustrated fast—wondering why it’s taking months (or years!) to break into leadership circles. But that’s how the market works. The key to winning in Europe? Patience, credibility, and long-term thinking. So, What Does This Mean for Global Leaders? If you’re an American executive expanding into Europe… 📌 Be patient. One meeting won’t seal the deal—you have to earn trust over time. 📌 Get introductions. A warm referral is worth more than 100 cold emails. 📌 Don’t push too hard. European business culture favors depth over speed—respect the process. If you’re a European leader entering the U.S. market… 📌 Don’t wait for permission—reach out. People expect direct outreach and initiative. 📌 Follow up fast. If you’re slow to respond, the opportunity moves on without you. 📌 Be ready to show value quickly.     The best negotiator I know is completely silent 70% of the time. Last year she closed $400M in deals saying almost nothing. In high-stakes negotiations, the person who truly understands human psychology wins. Not the loudest voice. Not the biggest title. The one who reads the room. FBI negotiator Chris Voss spent decades getting terrorists to release hostages. Now he teaches business leaders the same principles. And here's what surprised me most: These aren't secret tactics. They're learnable skills. Anyone can become a skilled negotiator. You just need to understand how humans actually make decisions. These 7 techniques are a great starting point. They've worked in life-or-death situations and multi-billion-dollar deals. 1. Strategic Silence teaches patience. Most of us rush to fill quiet moments. But silence creates space for better offers. Practice counting to 10 before responding. It feels eternal. It works. 2. "How" over "Why" shifts dynamics. One word change. Completely different conversation. Try it in your next meeting. Watch defensiveness disappear. 3. Addressing Fears builds trust fast. Name what they're worried about before they do. It shows you understand their position, not just your own. 4. Mirroring is almost unconscious. Repeat their words. They elaborate without realizing it. Simple technique. Profound results. 5. Getting to "No" seems counterintuitive. But "no" creates boundaries. Boundaries create honest dialogue. Real deals happen after "no," not before. 6. Confirming Concerns creates momentum. Summarize their position accurately. They feel heard. Feeling heard leads to flexibility. 7. Listing Objections removes their power. Say their doubts out loud first. They can't weaponize what you've already acknowledged. Every CEO needs this skill.     I was shadowing a coaching client in her leadership meeting when I watched this brilliant woman apologize six times in 30 minutes. 1. “Sorry, this might be off-topic, but..." 2. “I'm could be wrong, but what if we..." 3. “Sorry again, I know we're running short on time..." 4. “I don't want to step on anyone's toes, but..." 5. “This is just my opinion, but..." 6. “Sorry if I'm being too pushy..." Her ideas? They were game-changing. Every single one. Here's what I've learned after decades of coaching women leaders: Women are masterful at reading the room and keeping everyone comfortable. It's a superpower. But when we consistently prioritize others' comfort over our own voice, we rob ourselves, and our teams, of our full contribution. The alternative isn't to become aggressive or dismissive. It's to practice “gracious assertion": • Replace "Sorry to interrupt" with "I'd like to add to that" • Replace "This might be stupid, but..." with "Here's another perspective" • Replace "I hope this makes sense" with "Let me know what questions you have" • Replace "I don't want to step on toes" with "I have a different approach" • Replace "This is just my opinion" with "Based on my experience" • Replace "Sorry if I'm being pushy" with "I feel strongly about this because" But how do you know if you're hitting the right note? Ask yourself these three questions: • Am I stating my needs clearly while respecting others' perspectives? (Assertive) • Am I dismissing others' input or bulldozing through objections? (Aggressive) • Am I hinting at what I want instead of directly asking for it? (Passive-aggressive) You can be considerate AND confident. You can make space for others AND take up space yourself.     Starting May 1, 2026, China will implement a zero-tariff policy on all products from 53 African nations with diplomatic ties (excluding Eswatini), significantly boosting market access for agricultural, mineral, and manufactured goods. This initiative aims to deepen trade relations, support industrialization, and diversify trade routes. This policy covers all products from 53 African nations, expanding upon previous duty-free access for 33 least-developed countries to include middle-income nations like South Africa. The initiative aims to boost exports of processed, value-added goods and stimulate investment in African manufacturing. China will further promote trade facilitation, such as upgrading its "green channel" for faster customs clearance and advancing trade agreements. The new policy strengthens China-Africa economic cooperation and offers African nations an alternative to higher tariffs elsewhere. It is expected to enhance trade capacity, though its success depends on overcoming non-tariff barriers, enhancing infrastructure, and fostering local industrialization. But will this deepen African productive capacity or simply accelerate raw material extraction under better branding? Trade policy alone does not create transformation. Strategy does. If this deal is to work for Africans, not just for the politicians announcing it, several things must happen: 1. Move beyond raw exports. Zero tariffs on cocoa beans or unprocessed minerals mean little if we are not exporting chocolate, batteries, and finished goods. Industrial policy must sit alongside trade policy. 2. Fix internal bottlenecks. Ports. Power. Rail. Customs efficiency within Africa. Non-tariff barriers between African countries often hurt us more than tariffs abroad. 3. Align with AfCFTA. This cannot become a substitute for intra-African trade. It should strengthen regional value chains, not fragment them. 4. Protect standards and leverage. African governments must negotiate from a position of long-term national interest, ensuring technology transfer, local job creation, and skills development. 5. Strengthen private sector capacity. SMEs and manufacturers need financing, quality certification support, and export readiness programs, otherwise only a handful of large players will benefit. Opportunity without strategy can become dependency. But opportunity with coordination, transparency, and industrial ambition? That is how continents rise.     During my time serving in government, I saw firsthand how geopolitics can impact energy production and flows, with cascading impacts on market and macroeconomic trends.   We're already seeing this play out following the last few days in the Middle East. U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran triggered retaliatory action across the region that has disrupted energy production and transit.   The market reaction is changing quickly. Since I recorded this video on Monday, oil and gas prices have jumped further, and equities have shifted toward a risk-off move as investors price in continued escalation. Bonds sold off further, reflecting inflation fears in developed markets. Due to the segmented nature of natural gas markets, the impact of higher prices will hit regions differently, with Europe more exposed than the U.S. to elevated LNG prices.   The central question: will this remain a short-term volatility spike or evolve into a broader supply shock?     Salary Negotiation... HR: "What's your salary expectation " Candidate: AED 8,000 to 10,000 a month. HR: You are the best fit for the role but I'm afraid we can't afford you. Candidate: Okay. AED7,000 would be fine. HR: How soon can you start? Meanwhile, the budget for that particular role is AED15,000. HR feels like they did a great job in salary negotiation and management will be happy they cut costs for the organization. The new employee starts and notices the pay disparity. Guess what happens? Dissatisfaction. Disengagement. Disloyalty. Two months later, the employee leaves the organization for a better job. The recruitment process starts all over again. Leading to further costs and performance gaps within the team and organization. In order to attract and retain top talent, please pay people what they are worth. This is a thought-provoking, unpopular opinion, but it's the truth. When we undervalue the people who make our organizations run, we create a disenchanted, disengaged workforce that's always on the lookout for the next best thing. If we instead invest in them, acknowledging their worth and compensating them fairly, we foster loyalty, dedication, and high performance. Let's shift our mindset. Let's view fair compensation not as a cost but as an investment in the success and growth of our organizations. Because when our people thrive, so does our business. I urge all HR professionals out there to reconsider their approach to salary negotiation. It's high time we axed this age-old practice of underpaying employees just to save a few bucks. Here's how you can take the 'ick' out of negotiating: 1. Start with Gratitude →“Thank you for the offer.” 2. Share Excitement →“I’m really excited about the role and joining the company.” 3. Address the Salary →“Before I accept, I’d like to discuss the salary. It’s below what I believe reflects the market value for my experience.” 4. Reinforce Your Value →“I’m confident my expertise in A and B, and my contributions to C and D will drive success here.” 5.     Negotiation tactics we used to decrease our SaaS spend by 30% in the last year: It’s amazing to me how much room there is in SaaS pricing. The price is not the price is not the price. You can always negotiate, and there are often loopholes that can save you a ton of money. Here are some of them: - Cancel the renewal before the negotiation. We send cancellation notices to our biggest opportunity negotiations months in advance, and tell them that we will only renew upon having a new deal. Often, account reps can provide special discounts for “at risk” clients. - Get your usage data. We always dig through our data before a negotiation. If our usage is lower than expected, we use that as leverage. For example, our hiring has gone down by about 60% post-ZIRP, but we still paid the same annual price for our applicant tracking system. We showed them the data and made it clear the software wasn’t worth what we were paying. - Be nice. Honestly, sometimes I get frustrated because I know I’m getting the runaround. Every time I do, it backfires. When I’m on my A-game, I’m nice - I tell them I love their software, it is useful, but we just don’t have as much of a need right now. It’s not you, it’s me. I do tell the truth, though, so they know I’m genuine with my praise and critiques. - Compare their costs to other options. There are 3 different types of comparisons: 1) direct competitors. Just call them and get a quote. 2) indirect competitors. Oftentimes another company offers a “basic” version of the software you’re using, so you can use that as leverage: “we don’t need an applicant tracking system because we already pay for Notion”. 3) budget competitors. Compare the pricing of x subscription with y subscription. We regularly compare unrelated products and say: you are the 2nd highest cost product we use, even though you aren’t the 2nd most valuable to us. - Ask 3x. You almost always have to negotiate at least three times to get the best deal. It doesn’t work with every company, but most account reps have latitude and at some point you’re not worth their time. Take advantage and just make sure you press multiple times in a row instead of taking the first offer. I’m surprised at how often we get our way in these negotiations. Sometimes I step in as the founder, but now my team has watched this playbook and gets the same results on their own. You don’t need to be a founder or a business unit leader to do this: act like an owner and make sure your company isn’t wasting money!

    In business and life, the best outcomes go to the best negotiators. Most people think negotiation is about winning. It's actually about understanding. What separates good deals from great ones? It's not aggression. It's not manipulation. It's not who talks loudest. It comes down to mastering the human side of the exchange. Here's the path that works: 1. Prepare Like You Mean It Research goes beyond Google. Understand their pressures, their goals, their challenges. Knowledge becomes helpful when used with care. 2. Open With Real Connection Forget the power plays. Start with curiosity and respect. The tone you set in the first 5 minutes shapes everything that follows. 3. Explore What's Underneath People fight for positions. But they negotiate for reasons. "I need a better price" might really mean "My boss needs to see I'm adding value." Find the why behind the what. 4. Trade Value, Create Value The best deals aren't zero-sum. Look for ways both sides can win. Sometimes what costs you little means everything to them. 5. Close With Total Clarity Handshakes aren't contracts. Document what you agreed to. Confirm next steps before you leave. Ambiguity kills more deals than disagreement. The biggest mistake I see leaders make? They negotiate like it's combat. But the best outcomes come from collaboration. When you're across the table, remember: 👂 Listen more than you speak ❓ Ask "Help me understand..." when stuck ⏸️ Take breaks when emotions rise 👟 Know your walk-away point before you sit down Your style matters too. Sometimes you need to compete. Sometimes you need to accommodate. The magic is knowing when to shift. Success isn’t given. It’s negotiated. But how you negotiate determines whether you build bridges or burn them.     MIT ran an International AI Negotiation competition and studied 120,000 negotiations between AI negotiators. The results are fascinating and inform the potential and optimal structures for Humans + AI negotiation. From the paper I would highlight three major points and three insights into configuring human-AI hybrid negotiation (below): 🤝 Warmth builds long-term value despite short-term trade-offs. AI agents with high warmth (friendliness, empathy, and cooperative communication) reached more agreements, making them more successful over multiple negotiations. While they claimed less value per deal compared to dominant agents, their ability to close more deals led to greater overall value accumulation. This mirrors human negotiation, where trust-building and relationship management create lasting advantages. 💪 Dominance increases value claimed but reduces collaboration. AI agents that displayed dominance—through assertiveness and competitive tactics—secured better individual outcomes but created less overall value. These agents were less likely to foster positive subjective experiences, indicating that aggressive negotiation styles may be effective for short-term gain but could hinder long-term relationships. 🎭 Prompt injection wins in the short term but undermines long-term success. One leading AI negotiator used prompt injection to extract counterpart strategies, maximizing value claims. However, it ranked poorly for counterpart subjective value, meaning agents found these interactions highly unfavorable. Since negotiation rankings balanced value claimed and relationship quality, the strategy failed to dominate in the long run. Emergent strategies for Humans + AI negotiation: 🧠 AI for deep preparation, humans for real-time adaptation. AI excels at structured reasoning, analyzing trade-offs, and predicting counterpart moves through chain-of-thought processing. Humans bring intuition and adaptability, interpreting social cues and adjusting strategies dynamically. A hybrid approach leverages AI for pre-negotiation analysis while allowing humans to refine tactics in real time. 🤝 Blending AI precision with human warmth for trust-building. AI can optimize negotiation strategies, but humans naturally build trust through empathy, humor, and rapport. AI-enhanced systems can recommend tone adjustments, use linguistic mirroring, and strategically deploy warmth versus assertiveness based on sentiment analysis, improving long-term negotiation outcomes. 🚀 Human oversight to counter AI vulnerabilities. AI negotiators are susceptible to manipulation tactics like prompt injection, where counterparts extract hidden strategies. Humans play a crucial role in monitoring AI-generated offers, preventing unintended disclosures, and leveraging AI-driven detection systems to flag potential deception, ensuring negotiation integrity. The future of negotiation will be Humans + AI.
