You need to optimize for your lifetime. I learned this the hard way. For years, I chose work over my partner. So the love of my life ended things with me. And they were right to end things! They always came second to my career. But making "all the money" means nothing if: - You have no time to spend it. - You have no one left to spend it with. I quit that job within a few months. These are the new boundaries I put in place: 1/ Calendar block life FIRST ↳ Put in date nights, friend time, gym time 2/ Schedule hard stop commitments around 5pm ↳ Book your reservation for 5:30pm 3/ Put non-negotiables in the work calendar ↳ Make it visible so meetings don't creep in 4/ Stack focus hours before 3pm ↳ Late afternoons are for wrap-up only 5/ Create transition blocks ↳ 30 min morning & afternoon power up & close 6/ Set working hours in Slack/Teams ↳ No. work. apps. on. the. phone! 7/ Add buffer time everywhere ↳ 45 min meetings instead of 60 I hope they work for you, too. We got back together shortly after & are disgustingly happy. :) Work-life "balance" is a myth. But boundaries with work are possible. Optimize for where you're irreplacable. However, as my business grew, I noticed a crucial aspect slipping away - time with my loved ones. Yes! It was then that I understood the significance of work-life balance. Here’s how I make it work: 1: Prioritising Family Moments: Whether it's breakfast with my kids or evening walks with my spouse, I take out specific times dedicated solely to family. 2: Setting Boundaries: Saying no to work things that interfere with family time is crucial. It's about respecting both professional and personal commitments. 3: Delegate and Trust: I trust my team to handle tasks, so I can step back when needed and be fully present with my family mentally and emotionally. 4: Embracing Flexibility: Being adaptable in my schedule allows me to attend important family events without compromising business commitments. 5: Setting Clear Communication: Communicating openly with my family about my work commitments and involving them in my schedule helps manage expectations and reduces stress. 6: Learning from Mistakes: Looking back on what didn't work in the past helps me adjust how I balance work and family, getting better as time goes on. Balancing work and family isn't just about scheduling, it's about blending them together. I've found that time with my loved ones inspires my work and gives me a sense of purpose. As someone who works 7 days a week, I have had to create weekends and strict rest periods inside my days of active work. Saturday and Sundays are more led with personal tasks but I can't fully disconnect from the mission on weekends and so day naps, strict working days of 10am-3am and working after 8pm (the kids bedtime) become a method of achieving all of my goals and commitments. My consideration for you is: Clarify your values: Reflect on what truly matters to you. Identify your core values and aspirations in both your professional and personal spheres. Understanding what is most important will help you make more aligned choices. Set boundaries: Establish clear boundaries between work and personal life. Determine specific times and spaces dedicated to work, and make a conscious effort to disconnect and engage in activities that bring you joy and fulfillment outside of work. Communicate your boundaries to colleagues, clients, and loved ones to foster respect and understanding. Prioritise self-care: Taking care of yourself is crucial for maintaining overall well-being. Prioritise self-care activities that recharge and rejuvenate you, such as exercise, quality sleep, hobbies, and spending time with loved ones. Remember that self-care is not selfish; it enables you to show up as your best self in all areas of life. Assess your workload: Evaluate your workload and responsibilities realistically. Be mindful of taking on too much and learn to delegate or say no when necessary. Recognise that you have limitations, and it is essential to avoid burnout by finding a sustainable balance between productivity and rest. Foster open communication: Engage in open and honest communication with your employer, colleagues, and loved ones about your work-life balance priorities. Clearly express your needs and concerns, and seek solutions that accommodate both personal and professional commitments. Collaborative dialogue can lead to mutually beneficial arrangements. Embrace flexibility: Explore opportunities for flexible work arrangements, such as remote work, flexible hours, or compressed workweeks. Flexibility can help create more space for personal pursuits and enable a better integration of work and life responsibilities. Practice mindfulness and presence: Cultivate mindfulness by being fully present in the present moment, whether you are at work or engaged in personal activities. By focusing on the task at hand, you can enhance productivity, reduce stress, and derive greater enjoyment from your experiences. Regularly reassess and adjust: Recognise that work-life balance is a dynamic process. Regularly assess your approach, considering your changing circumstances and priorities. Adjust your choices and commitments accordingly to maintain a harmonious equilibrium over time.

Can we all agree to throw out the phrase work-life balance? It's not attainable, and I see too many people burning out trying to achieve it. Let's shoot for work-life harmony instead. Striving for work-life harmony is a much more realistic and sustainable approach. 🌟 Work-life harmony doesn't mean juggling equal time between work and personal life. It's about creating a rhythm where these aspects complement and support each other instead of competing for attention. Here's how you can achieve it: 1. Boundaries with Purpose: Clearly define when work starts and ends. Set limits on emails and calls outside those hours, allowing you to engage in personal activities without work distractions fully. 2. Prioritization Power: Prioritize tasks based on impact and deadlines. When you're at work, focus on high-impact tasks so you can be present for personal time, knowing you've tackled the essentials. 3. Flex Your Way: Embrace flexibility in how and where you work. Some days might be better for early mornings, others for late nights. Flexibility keeps you productive while accommodating personal needs. 4. Many of the professionals I talk to, feel that their jobs are responsible for the stress and disconnect they experience at home. Long hours, heavy demands, the constant "always-on" culture—it's exhausting, and it feels natural to blame the job. But sometimes, the key isn’t about the job itself—it’s about your approach to it. 𝑊ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑑𝑜 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑘? 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: 𝑹𝒆𝒇𝒓𝒂𝒎𝒆 𝒀𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝑾𝒐𝒓𝒌 𝑴𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒔𝒆𝒕. If work feels like an endless treadmill, it's hard to stay motivated. If your breaks consist of scrolling on your phone, you might not actually be recharging. Try activities that genuinely refresh you—step outside, listen to a podcast, or do something that energizes your mind. Real breaks make you feel more in control. 𝐋𝐞𝐭 𝐆𝐨 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐦. High standards are great, but if you’re constantly pushing for perfection, it’s easy to burn out. Focus on delivering quality, not flawless work. Sometimes, 90% is all you need to make an impact. 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐢 𝐌𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐉𝐨𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐃𝐚𝐲. These don’t have to be grand gestures. It could be a few minutes of being with yourself, a great playlist, or even a favorite snack. ‘Work-life balance is your problem, not the employer’s responsibility’. I winced when Skims CEO Emma Grede said this a recent interview. It’s rough to hear this sentiment expressed so bluntly in 2025. It feels like a slap in the face to those working hard to balance professional ambition with meaningful family presence. But honestly? I’m glad she said it out loud. Loads of employers feel exactly this way. They're just not bold enough to admit it in print. The reality is that most employers prioritize business results over your personal wellbeing. That doesn’t mean work-life alignment is dead. But waiting for your employer to hand it to you is a mistake. The sustainable path forward isn't hoping your company culture changes. It's taking ownership of your own professional stamina. — I exclusively coach women balancing big jobs and small kids. These are 5 things that I’ve seen work to align work and life: 1/ Set your boundaries ↳ Your time and attention are your most precious resources. ↳ Define your non-negotiables and communicate them with calm confidence. This isn't selfish—it's essential for sustainable success. 2/ Build your support system ↳ Cultivate relationships with mentors, peers, coaches and allies who understand your dual commitments. ↳This community is both a sounding board and board of advisors. 3/ Manage energy, not just time ↳ Protect your peak productivity hours at work like they're gold. ↳ Create a transition ritual that helps you be truly present when you're with your family—your children deserve your engaged attention, not just your physical presence. Everything feels high-stakes for Executives in their late 40s and 50s. You start to see managers younger than you moving up, and colleagues older than you getting displaced.
